The Last Great Relay - 2011

The Big Project for 2011 was a reconstruction of the trackbed, at a higher level, with more concrete, followed by a complete relay in Peco track. I'd had more years than I care to remember of muttering and cursing over the chairs coming out of the sleepers on Brandbright track (even on lengths which had been laid comparatively recently) so I decided to take the bull by the horns.
Unfortunately, it didn't work out.............

Having been bought some of the track for Christmas, the first task was to lift the existing PW..............

.......... removing all the screws which held the battens to the hardwood strips.............

.......... leaving just the ballast in place.

(Ordnance Survey) "Track of Old Railway"

Having swept most of the ballast out of the way...............

............ no less than 64 strips of 2" X 1" Iroko were screwed to the original hardwood strips...........

.............. with the odd stone trapped underneath the strips to ensure they were level.

Good Friday saw the first track laid.......................

.............. whilst the concreting went past the loco shed...............

.............. to the far end (almost) of Alport Junction station.

Track laying round the curve........

........ to the loco shed...............

.............. whilst the points for Alport Junction get tried out.

Alport Junction coming on.......................

....... with the second platform outside the running line, instead of between them.............

There's plenty of room for the MDLR's largest stock (the W&L van and brake van) to pass........

...............and the loco shed's connected to the main line.
Tomorrow.......... more concrete!

Unfortunately, it didn't happen.....................
On Friday 20th May, I came out to cut the lawn, to find this scene of devastation.....

............... with the remains of the street lighting in Over Haddon ripped out............

......... and a few of these as the sole remains of 26 yards of track and four turnouts.
